One of my biggest self-care goals for 2024 is to improve my skin care habits. I’m guilty of falling asleep with my makeup on, forgetting to apply moisturizer or sunscreen, and not spending enough time cleansing my pores. Before I became a new mom last year, I’d treat myself to a facial or chemical peel a few times a year. But now, I don’t have the time or energy to leave the house for those types of appointments. Instead, I decided to invest in a few skincare items that could improve my fine lines and acne scars from the comfort of my own home.

After doing some research, I came across the HXDZFX LED Facial Light Therapy Mask on Amazon that had over 500 five-star reviews. I had never used one of these masks before, but it seemed like a popular option amongst friends and family members. A lot of people I knew received one of these LED facial light therapy masks as a holiday gift. When I asked how they liked it, they raved about the benefits. I decided to test one out myself. After using it every day for two weeks, here’s what I liked and didn’t like about the popular Amazon mask.

What is an LED Light Therapy Mask?

I’m the kind of person who loves face masks because you can apply them at home, leave them on, and do other tasks. I usually use a cream-based face mask that rubs onto my skin or a sheet mask that lays on top of my skin for an hour or so.

But when I started seeing more people using LED facial light therapy masks, I found myself curious about them. These face masks use LED lights to rejuvenate the skin and diminish blemishes. The wavelengths from different colors of lights impact the skin at a cellular level, which is different from face masks that are applied topically.

What are the Benefits of an LED Light Therapy Mask?

What really made me want to invest $99 in an LED light therapy mask was the long list of benefits that dermatologists shared about using one of these devices on your skin. Overall, these masks can help with signs of aging and reduce inflammation. These are two areas that I’d like to focus on. I have wrinkles forming, acne scars, and recurring blemishes that pop up on my chin and forehead.

Other benefits of an LED light therapy mask include increased levels of collagen, which help with wrinkles, and a reduction in sun damage, rosacea, and more.

How to Use an LED Light Therapy Mask

These LED masks seem intimidating to use at first because they are quite large and come with a lot of settings. For most of the masks, getting started is easy. It’s recommended to first prepare your skin by cleaning it and applying any skin products that you prefer, whether moisturizer or serums.

Then you can grab your mask and turn on the settings that you’d like to use. Most masks prefer you to wear it for 15-30 minutes at a time. Since the masks have eye holes, you are able to put it on and still be able to move around, watch TV, or take care of household tasks.

I Tested Out Amazon's Popular LED Light Therapy Mask

When searching for an LED light therapy mask, I had a few must-haves. I wanted a mask that was under $100 that I could wear while being hands-free. While there are quite a range of face masks out there, I found that a lot of them were at a high price point, of around $300-$600. I decided to search on Amazon and found one for $99 that had great reviews.

I spent two weeks testing out the LED light therapy mask from Amazon and here’s what I liked and didn’t like about it.

Here’s What I Liked About the Mask

The Mask Covers Your Face and Neck Area

I was shocked to see that when I put on the mask it was long enough to cover both my face and neck. This seemed like an added bonus, since most of the masks out there don’t include coverage for your neck. I enjoyed that the mask offered treatment for that area. Plus, it detaches and you can use that extra part for other parts of your body if you want.

The Mask Has Seven Different LED Light Colors

The mask included seven different colored LED lights. Each color has a different purpose in regard to what it targets and improves about your skin. For example, the red light helps stimulate collagen and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The blue light helps with acne and the green light reduces redness and calms the skin. I liked how the different color options helped me customize my nightly treatments. Some nights, I’d pick two different colors and rotate between them, every ten minutes.

The Mask Became Part of My Routine

Using the face mask didn’t interrupt my nighttime routine at all. It was easy to put on and walk around. I found myself wearing it while watching TV, folding laundry, and even answering emails. After wearing the face mask every night for two-weeks, I noticed a slight difference in my skin. While I didn’t see my wrinkles fade away, my overall complexion felt smoother and a lot of my redness seemed to fade. Because the mask required low effort to use and the results seemed to be showing up after only two weeks, it made me want to continue wearing the mask on a nightly basis for a few more weeks.

Here’s What I Didn’t Like About the Mask

The Fit Wasn’t So Great

I hoped the mask would fit my face better than it did. The top of the mask was too large and the bottom was too small. This made it tough to stay on my face, even with a head strap. I had to constantly hold it in place, which became annoying over time. The neck part that hooks onto the mask was nice to have but made the mask feel too heavy. I found that I rarely added the neck part on because it made the mask more uncomfortable to wear, especially if I wasn’t sitting still on the couch. This mask seemed better for someone looking to wear it while lying in bed or lounging around their apartment. Because I wanted to be more active when wearing it, it often felt heavy and uncomfortable.

The Instructions Were Confusing

The great part about this LED facial light therapy mask was that it had so many options for settings and for the colored lights that you can pick from. However, setting the mask up was confusing. The instructions were hard to follow and figuring out how to connect the parts took me longer than expected. In the end, it took me around 25 minutes to set up the mask. It took me three days of trying it out to feel confident in using it and understanding all of the settings. If you’re someone who is more impatient and looking for a mask that’s easy to use off the bat, this might not be the option for you.

I Felt Pings of Pain

I found that I could only wear the mask for 20 minutes at a time. If I had it on any longer, my face felt hot and the light started to hurt my eyes. I also noticed that every few minutes, I’d feel a ping from the mask that would sting my face making the experience a little painful. I haven’t tried other LED light therapy masks so I don’t know if a little pain is normal, but there were some moments when my face felt like it was getting stung by a bee. When that happened, I’d turn the mask off and end my usage for the night.

Bottom Line

If you are looking for an LED light therapy mask that's just under $100 and offers you a variety of settings and color options, this mask is worth a try. For the price, you get seven different light therapy options and the added bonus of a neck mask. However, there is a bit of a learning curve when using the mask and you might find it uncomfortable, especially after using it for more than 20 minutes. If you’re someone who wants to pop an LED light therapy mask on while relaxing on the couch, THIS MASK could be a great option for you to try out!
