Let's Get Glam
When you’re preparing for your wedding, you have a lot of decisions to make, from what kind of food to serve your guests to what song you want playing for your first dance.
But when it comes to your wedding style, you might not realize how many different things you have to think about. From your dress to your shoes, your jewelry to your hair and makeup, picking out your final look can take a little bit of time, and even some dress rehearsals.
To help make the process easier, read on for the mistakes that hair stylists wish brides would stop making, so you can cross these off your to-do list when figuring out your wedding glam.
Don’t skip out on the heavy-hold products
While you might not be a person who usually uses hair products, Ghanima Abdullah, a hairstylist at The Right Hairstyles, says your wedding day should be different.
"You're going to want to use heavy hold products on the day of your wedding," says Abdullah. "We all want flowing hair, but during the reception that breezy look will likely look very messy."
Abdullah also shares that brides might not realize that the day is too long and there's too much movement going on to let your strands do what they want. "It's much better to hairspray each hair in place, and you won't have to worry," says Abdullah.
Don’t wash your hair on the day of your wedding
On the morning of your wedding day, you might wake up and feel eager to take a shower and wash your hair. But Rebekkah O'Neill, founder of The Orchard Hair, says that it’s best to skip doing that.
"This can affect how well their hairstyle holds up throughout the day and how well they can be styled," she says. "When hair is too clean, it lacks natural oils, which makes it less pliable. Allowing some natural oils in the hair can help hair grips, backcombing, and curls stay in place throughout the events of the day."
Instead, O’Neill recommends washing your hair the morning before your wedding day to remove any unwanted build-up, while still allowing natural oils to occur throughout the day.
Don’t leave it up to the hairstylist
If you’re having trouble figuring out what to do with your hair, Watson Anthony, a professional hairstylist, says try to have ideas before your big day.
To do this, he recommends a hair trial before the wedding, but if that’s not possible, at least having inspiration photos for the type of hairstyle you want will give your hair stylist more to work with, and you also waste less time on the wedding day.
Not understanding their hair type
One mistake that you might not even know you’re making is being aware of what hair styles work best for your hair type.
"There is only so much a hair stylist can do with the hair they are given to work with. It’s a good idea for a bride to look at specific hairstyles for your type of hair," says Anthony. "If you have short hair and would rather it be long for your wedding, looking at getting extensions for example can give you more control over the type of hairstyle you want."
Not factoring in the weather
Even though you can’t predict the actual weather of your big day, Anthony says it’s still important to consider the season you’re getting married in.
"The season you get married in can tell you a lot about the weather you could expect, but also keep an eye on the weather as your wedding approaches," he says.
Forgetting about hair accessories
One big thing you want to remember when planning your wedding hair is what accessories you want to include with your style. Fiona Taylor, a professional hairstylist, says to think about this before you pick your final look.
"Having a decorative comb, pins or hair band can really pull your look together and elevate your style," she says. "Remember that a bride can never be too glamorous. If you're on the fence about adding a hair accessory, just buy it. Chances are your hairstylist will find the perfect placement."
