The Cakes Couples Are Raving About
There are many sweet moments that you and your partner will have during your wedding planning adventure. You might find joy in picking out your florals or reception decor, or you might be the type of couple who enjoys taking lessons to prepare for the first dance.
But if you’re a couple with a love for dessert, you might be most excited to meet with your caterer or local bakery to decide on the cake flavor for your reception.
If you’re hoping to go with a flavor that has a tasty twist, here are the 8 most popular cake flavors of 2023, according to experts!
Vanilla Salted Caramel Pretzel
If you’re in the mood for a cake that mixes salty and sweet, Bess Charles, co-owner of LadyCakes, says that their vanilla salted caramel pretzel cake has been extra popular this year, because it’s an unusual option that's also quite familiar to people’s taste buds.
"The light and airy vanilla cake is smothered in homemade signature salted caramel pretzel buttercream," says Charles. "This provides a sweet and salty flavor."
Raspberry Vanilla Bean Buttercream
For couples looking for a more traditional wedding cake with a little twist, Charles says their light and airy raspberry cake paired with vanilla bean buttercream has been adored by couples this year.
"The cake itself is very reminiscent of a champagne cake and to me that screams wedding cake," says Charles.
Hummingbird Cake With Cream Cheese Frosting
When deciding on a cake flavor, Chef Yohann Le Bescond recommends going with one that works any time of the year, like the hummingbird cake, a banana-pineapple spice cake with cream cheese frosting.
"For a couple looking to revisit the southern tradition and bring back the feeling of a nostalgic recipe, this cake is an excellent choice," he says. "It is outside the box of the classic vanilla cake and will pleasantly surprise your guests."
Vanilla Cake with Peach Cobbler Filling
If you want a simple cake with a fresh twist, Le Bescond suggests a popular option, a vanilla cake with peach cobbler filling.
"Cobbler is full of flavor and juicy peaches; pairing that with a moist and fluffy vanilla cake is the perfect combo," he says. "After a lot of heavy food during the celebration of the wedding, a light, fruity option is always welcome."
Earl Grey and Lavender Cake
In addition to picking out a wedding cake, you might also want an option for your bridal shower. Sarah Jacobs, founder of Cake Muse, says a popular flavor is the earl grey and lavender cake.
"I often encourage pairing a color with a flavor so that guests not only see the lavender, but then experience the flavor with their first bite of cake," says Jacobs.
Chantilly Cake
Looking for a timeless cake your guests will adore? Jacobs recommends a Chantilly cake, named after the whipped frothy cream, creme Chantilly, as well as the Castle of Chantilly in France.
"Traditionally, it is served with berries and whipped frosting, but you can change the outer layer of frosting to a simple buttercream so that it holds longer," says Jacobs. "If your cake has multiple tiers, you can add an arrangement for each layer or keep it simple at the top."
Italian Cream Cake
If couples can’t do a destination wedding in Italy, they are bringing the flavors to their wedding menu. Jacobs has seen this a lot recently as more couples are picking an Italian Cream Cake.
"The rich flavors of pecan, coconut, and almond paired with cream cheese frosting are enough to make all your guests smile," she says.
Chocolate Raspberry Cake
When a couple has two different flavors they love, combining them together could make the perfect cake option. Justin Ellen, of Everything Just Baked, says a popular combination he sees is a chocolate raspberry cake, which is the perfect balance between sweet and tart.
"Nothing pairs better with a decadent chocolate cake than a raspberry compote. This flavor is perfect for the chocolate lovers out there," he says.
