What Not to Wear
When you’re getting ready for an upcoming wedding, deciding on the perfect outfit to wear can be a mix of a lot of fun and a lot of stress. Even if the couple gives you a specific dress code to follow, there’s always the fear of coming underdressed or overdressed to the celebration. But one thing you should watch out for is wearing something that’s off-limits when it comes to standard wedding attire.
Want to make sure you avoid any fashion faux-pas at upcoming weddings? Here are seven styles to avoid, unless the couple tells you otherwise.
The Color White
One big wedding tradition that many brides follow is wearing a white dress to their wedding. Not only do they want this gown to stand out, but they usually don’t want anyone else there wearing that same color. So if you’re thinking of wearing any shade of white (cream, off-white, etc.) reconsider the outfit choice for this celebration.
Tiara or Diamond Headpiece
While it’s okay to wear hair clips, colorful pins, or even headbands to a wedding, try not to wear a tiara or a diamond headpiece, which are items that a bride might incorporate into her hairstyle.
Shorts
Even if the wedding attire calls for cocktail attire or casual attire, it’s a good rule of thumb to avoid wearing shorts. Instead, go with a skirt, ankle length dress pants, or a dress instead.
Jeans
Have a pair of jeans that you think are fancy enough for a wedding? It’s best to rethink your outfit choice and leave the denim at home. Wearing jeans to a celebration might come off too casual, even for a wedding that has a less-strict dress code. Instead, look for pants in cotton, linen, lace, or polyester fabric.
Yoga Pants or Sweatpants
Want to go with a comfy look? You can still do that without wearing your favorite yoga pants or sweatpants to a wedding. Instead, pick a more flowy dress, skirt, or jumpsuit in a breathable fabric that doesn’t hug the body.
Certain Shoe Attire
For the ceremony and the start of the reception, wear a pair of shoes that fit in with the style and attire of your outfit. For example, for a formal wedding, pair your look with heels, for cocktail attire, pair your look with wedges or a closed toe shoe. Save the flip-flops or comfortable sneakers for a shoe change mid-way through the reception when the dance floor opens.
Casual T-Shirts
Want to pair a skirt or pants look with a t-shirt or tank top? You can absolutely pull off that look for a wedding, as long as the top has a formal feel to it. Go with a silk or or lace fabric to give it a more appropriate look and avoid graphic t-shirts or anything that just feels too casual.
