The fall season typically marks the start of the cold and flu season. It's the time when I clean out my bathroom shelves and medicine cabinet to make sure I'm prepared with all the essential items in case anyone in the house gets sick.
In addition to stocking up on tissues and vitamins, I asked pediatricians what items are important to have at home to prepare for the upcoming cold and flu season. Here's what they shared.
A Thermometer
If it's been a while since someone in your house has fallen ill, Dr. Beene recommended that you first make sure you have a working thermometer.
"While kids often feel warm to touch, it is helpful to know if a child is truly having fevers, which can most accurately be measured with a thermometer," she said.
Dr. Beene also shared that if the fever lasts more than 2-3 days, it’s time to schedule a visit to see the pediatrician.
Antipyretic Medications
If you do see that your child's temperature is on the rise, Dr. Beene said it's helpful to have antipyretic medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen handy.
"If your child has a fever or is uncomfortable from aches and pains related to being sick, acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen can help them feel a lot better," she said.
Oral Rehydration Solution
One of the most important things to do when you're under the weather is to stay hydrated. Dr. Beene explained that hydration is paramount for kids all the time, especially when they are sick.
"When kids don’t feel well, they don't drink as much. Add vomiting or diarrhea to the mix and they can become really dehydrated really quickly," she said.
"Oral rehydration solutions replace both water as well as necessary electrolytes to help kids avoid getting even sicker."
Nasal Saline and Suction
Cold and flu season often brings along noses that get very stuffy. Dr. Beene suggested stocking up on nasal saline and suction items.
"For babies and toddlers who aren't old enough to blow their noses, having nasal saline and a good nasal suction can help a great deal for making them feel more comfortable and be able to eat and sleep more easily," she said.

A Humidifier
If you live in an area where you often crank up the heat in the colder months, Dr. Murray Clarke suggested investing in a humidifier.
"A humidifier helps maintain optimal air moisture, which is especially important when indoor heating can dry out the air," he said. "Keeping airways moist can support respiratory health and make breathing easier for children, especially in dry environments."
Vitamin D Supplement
As you look to stay proactive during the cold and flu season, Dr. Clarke said that having vitamin D handy can play a crucial role in supporting the immune system.
"Vitamin D plays a crucial role in supporting the immune system," he said.
"Many children don't get enough sunlight, especially during colder months, so having a high-quality vitamin D supplement at home can help maintain healthy levels and support their overall immune health."
Probiotic Supplements
Another item Dr. Clarke said is great for your immune system is probiotics.
"Gut health is key to overall immune function and probiotics help maintain a healthy balance of good bacteria," she said. "A daily probiotic supplement can support digestion and help build your child’s natural defense mechanisms."
