BROWNIES:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 stick unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the pan
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
FROSTING:
- 1 stick unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 cups confectioner’s sugar
- 1 tablespoon whole milk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-by-13 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, stir together the flour and sugar. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, shortening, cocoa and water and bring to a rolling boil. Remove from the heat and pour over the flour mixture. Mix well until smooth.
While whisking, add the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, cinnamon and vanilla, stopping once or twice to scrape down the sides of the bow, until smooth. Spread evenly into the prepared pan. Bake until the brownies begin to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 35 minutes.
While the brownies bake, make the frosting. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Once melted, beat in the cocoa until smooth. Beat in the confectioner’s sugar until smooth. Beat in the milk and vanilla to make a smooth frosting.
Spread the frosting over the warm brownies. Cut into squares to serve.
