Baylen's Sweetest Victories So Far
Navigating life as a young adult with Tourrette Syndrome is no easy feat, but with a strong support system, Baylen Dupree has had so many big wins to be proud of! Look back at these powerful moments from the past two seasons of Baylen Out Loud.
Birthday Bravery
Baylen's younger brother, Bechnir, wanted to spend his birthday playing games and having fun at Harper's Ferry. Unfortunately, Baylen had a negative experience there in the past. People were unkind to her and weren't understanding of her tics, so she and her family worried that would happen again.
Luckily, Baylen agreed to go and although she received some stares, she and her family had a wonderful time celebrating Bechnir's big day!
Chef Baylen
Baylen was on the road to gaining independence. She wanted to move out, but needed to master certain skills like cooking. However, some of Baylen's tics made cutting and preparing food into dangerous tasks. So, she and her family found ways to help, like introducing plastic knives in the kitchen.
A Successful Flight
Baylen got invited to speak at Tic-Con in Dallas, Texas. She was excited about the opportunity, but terrified to go through the airport and fly to the conference. Despite her nerves, Baylen and her mom, Julie, made the trip. Baylen was able to face her fears head on!
The Tic-Con Panel
Baylen admitted that she wasn't prepared to speak at Tic-Con, so her anxiety got the best of her. She experienced several tics while sitting with the panel, but she was able to tell her story and touch the hearts of those in the audience. In the end, Baylen's authenticity won over the crowd and Julie was so proud of her.
New Friends
Baylen met some awesome people at Tic-Con. So, she decided to hang out with the new friends she made. In the past, Baylen avoided befriending other people with Tourette Syndrome because she was scared they would absorb each other's tics or set them off. But now, she was thrilled to be part of a supportive community.
A Sigh of Relief
Baylen and her boyfriend, Colin, wanted to move in together! They agreed to share the news with his parents, Chuck and Marlene, towards the end of their visit to Roanoke, VA. Unfortunately, waiting to tell Colin's parents threw Baylen for a loop. Baylen worried that Colin's parents wouldn't approve of the new living situation and it flared her anxiety. She tried to suppress her tics and Colin could tell it was taking a toll on her.
In the end, she and Colin shared their plans and Chuck and Marlene were supportive of their decision. Baylen was so relieved.
Girls' Day
Baylen invited her longtime friend, Aileen, and newer friend from Tic-Con, Olivia, to go shopping! Although Baylen and Olivia set off each other's tics at times, they felt their friendship mattered way more.
Baylen also shared that she and Colin were moving in together and Aileen and Olivia were excited for her new chapter. The ladies bonded as they browsed for home decor and colorful houseware.
Now, she just had to find an apartment.
Trying a New Treatment
Baylen looked into non-invasive treatments to help with her tics. Olivia tried and suggested Botox inejections, later joining Baylen and Julie for an office visit. After talking with a professional, Baylen tried the injections to see if they would reduce the motor tics in her face and jaw.
Welcome Home
Baylen and Colin found a beautiful apartment! Baylen's family helped with the moving process and ushered them into this next chapter of their lives.
Future Bride
Baylen was excited to go on a family trip to Ocean City, Maryland. Little did she know, she was about to become a fiance!
Colin and Baylen's family coordinated a surprise proposal and Baylen had no clue what she was walking into. Colin shared some beautiful words in front of their loves ones and popped the question. Baylen, of course, said yes and she was thrilled to take her relationship with Colin to the next level.
And the Venue Is...
Baylen's dad threw her and Colin a wonderful engagement party and the couple decided to announce the location of their wedding venue. Previously, Baylen and Colin felt pulled in multiply directions and Baylen's parents even offered up their backyard. Baylen felt free to tic in The Seclusion, a beautiful private venue atop a mountain near Colin's family in Roanoke.
This was a huge decision for Baylen and Colin to make and althoug the future bride worried about disappointing her father, she made the best decision for herself. I fact, Baylen's dad voiced how proud he was for following her own path and choosing what she truly wanted.
Horsey Health Kick
Baylen's new medication helped her mood immensely, but weight gain was a definite side effect. Unfortunately, the extra pounds knocked her self-esteem a bit and she wanted a change — especially with the wedding coming up. Baylen couldn't get herself to go to the gym because of the germs from other gym goers, so she and Colin agreed to create healthy habits and work out together. They tried out a new hobby horse-inspired class. It was a... unique experience and provided lots of cardio! Baylen and Colin weren't sure about taking another class, but it got them motivated to continue their health journey together.
Facing a Fear
Colin wanted to ride off into the sunset with Baylen on their wedding day, but Baylen had a crippling fear of horses. The couple visited a farm to introduce Baylen to horses with calm exposure therapy. It took her some time to work through her anxiety, but as she moved closer, she was able to relax and eventually interact with one of the horses, Sparky. Baylen and Colin pet the horse, which was a big step for her. Afterward, she led Sparky on a walk and even helped clean his hooves! Baylen was so proud of herself and said it helped to picture Sparky as a giant version of her dog, Fluff.
My Brain Feels Different
Baylen and her family treveled to the UK with one goal in mind: testing out the Neupulse device. It uses peripheral nerve stimulation to her control and lessen tics. Baylen attached the new tech to her wrist and said, "I feel calm." This wasn't a feeling that she was used to and her parents became emotional seeing something make such a major difference in Baylen's tics so quickly. Baylen was able to use the device out in public for a few hours and she couldn't believe how different she felt.
"I haven't felt like this since I was 13 years old," Baylen sobbed.
Although Baylen couldn't bring the Neupulse back to America (because of pending FDA approval), it was a huge relief that something existed to help those with Tourette syndrome and tic disorders. Baylen was hopeful that she could use it again in the future.
