TLC star Jazz Jennings graced the cover of Variety’s 2021 Power of Pride Issue. The 20-year-old trailblazer is a TLC favorite with her show, I Am Jazz, which documents her daily life as a transgender young woman growing in this modern world.
"I feel so honored to be featured on the cover of Variety Magazine for their Pride issue," Jazz shared in an Instagram post. "Never in a million years did my family think that just by sharing our story with Barbara Walters on 20/20 back in 2007 that we would affect so many lives. Many years later, I’m proud of my identity as a transgender woman and I’m proud to be a part of a broader LGBTQ+ community. Together we stand united during these strenuous times, but history is on our side, the side of love."
Jazz’s story came to light during her 2007 interview with Barbara Walters. During the 20/20 episode, six-year-old Jazz expressed her truth with confidence and clarity, becoming one of the youngest in the trans community to speak to millions about her identity. Since then, she’s paved the way for other transgender youth to be bold about their experiences — winning a GLAAD Media Award last year and being featured on an OWN special titled I Am Jazz: A Family in Transition.
The cover story included interviews with Jazz, her family, and actors such as Laverne Cox. The Orange Is the New Black Star describes Jazz as "charismatic," saying: "Her humanity was so on display that you couldn’t deny she had the right to be who she was."
Jazz was part of Variety’s Power of Pride 2021 List, alongside successful figures including Elliot Page, Robin Roberts, and Demi Lovato.
"I’m not the only one who’s trying to make a difference in the world," Jazz says in the piece. "I’m just one person doing what I can to make a difference."
With season 7 in the works, you can binge-watch I Am Jazz on discovery+ and TLC GO.
