Elizabeth & Andrei
For Elizabeth and Andrei, Thanksgiving is always an opportunity to dress up and make memories with their daughter, Ellie. With baby Winston joining the family this year, we bet they're eager to celebrate as a family of four!
Loren & Alexei
According to Loren, "Thanksgiving has always been 'the holiday' we had at my house...for as long as I can remember. It’s just a feast!"
Alexei says his first Thanksgiving was "great. Loved learning about the history of the holiday, don’t like cranberry jam and love the stuffing."
This will be their first Thanksgiving as a family of five!
Jovi & Yara
Jovi's family "usually gets everyone together. My mom usually does a good bit of the cooking, but everyone in the family brings something over. Everyone usually ends up drinking and having a good time like always."
Yara says her first Thanksgiving in the US was "kind of strange, but cool. I was just starting to know Jovi’s family, and I spent Thanksgiving with them while Jovi was working. My favorite food was Jovi’s Grandma’s dirty brown rice. It was so good and I also liked the turkey."
However, she was surprised to see mac and cheese on the menu, as well as a "strange soup."
Jenny & Sumit
"On Thanksgiving, my daughters get together and share the cooking and just spend the day together. In India, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but Sumit will cook anything I want on the day. Usually chicken. We will have Indian sweets sometime that evening," Jenny explains.
David & Annie
David says, "Growing up, we would have all my cousins and aunts and uncles come over to the house in NJ. Since Annie and I have been together, we spent the first two Thanksgivings with my mom and uncle in West Virginia since we lived close by. After we moved to Arizona, we didn't do anything special for the day since Annie's birthday is November 28th.
In Thailand, when they have big holiday's like Songkran (Thai New Year from April 13 to 16), everyone goes home to the village and parties. They pay respect to the elders for three days and pay respect to the dead, party, and throw water on each other. We usually go out and party in old town Scottsdale to celebrate Thanksgiving and her birthday."
Ed & Liz
"We usually celebrate Thanksgiving at my sister Christine's house in Arkansas," says Ed.
Liz adds, "Haven’t celebrated Thanksgiving with my family in a few years. After everyone moved away into different states or to different towns, no one really celebrated anymore. Typically, just a sit-down dinner. The last two years, I have spent Thanksgiving with Ed. One year in Seattle with my daughter, him and I and last year at a close friend of Ed’s house with him. This year, we haven’t decided what we are doing yet. I hadn’t celebrated Thanksgiving in over 10 years until I met Ed."
Bilal & Shaeeda
Shaeeda's first Thanksgiving in America "was a small occasion with Bilal’s children and his mother. It was during Covid, so people were still avoiding large gatherings. Although it was a few of us, the food was the best part. For the first time, I had sweet potato pie and America’s famous mac and cheese. The food was delicious. My favorite was the mac and cheese and my least favorite was the turkey because I am not a fan of turkey meat at all."
"My holiday traditions in Trinidad are similar to how Thanksgiving is spent in the USA. My family and I get together and make barbecue and creole food. No shade to Kansas City, but the barbecue back home is the best to me. Saucy and flavorful. I miss our traditional barbecue moments for the holidays," she adds.
Bilal says, "My family generally all comes together for Thanksgiving to travel into KC, Vegas, or Atlanta. This year will be in KC. We haven’t experienced Thanksgiving all together since 2019 due to Covid and since the passing of my father. Thanksgiving dinner in KC is normally at my parents' home. After our Thanksgiving meal, we normally play games like Taboo as a family. Looking forward to us all getting together again, it’s been a long time and I'm excited that Shaeeda gets to experience Thanksgiving the normal way we celebrate. Also, she’ll get to meet more of the family as well."
Caesar
"Since I moved to North Carolina, my nail technician coworkers are my family because I have lived in North Carolina 28 years now. For Thanksgiving, I stay in North Carolina with my friends," says Caesar.
Debbie
"I love this time of year. Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite Holiday. I always cook a big turkey with all the extras. Especially homemade stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce. All the good stuff," says Debbie.
Veronica
"I have hosted Thanksgiving since I was in college, and we continue that tradition. My parents and brother will come into town and stay with me and we’ll cook a big meal together while we watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade," says Veronica.
Tiffany
Tiffany says, "On Thanksgiving, usually we all pick who’s house we’re gonna celebrate it at. I believe this year, we’re going to do it at my sister's house with her fiance.
This Thanksgiving, in memory of my grandmother, we are going to honor all of the traditions that she made for so many years! We’re going to cook our traditional pernil (pork thigh) and the whole family will bring their own dish, sort of like a potluck. This year, I’m making pie and my specialty creamy chicken pesto penne.
We’re going to spend the day close to each other, eating good food, dancing the night away, and just being happy together (and of course taking lots of selfies!)."
