When 25-year-old Sarah Cummins and her fianc?, Logan Araujo, called off their engagement only a week before their summer wedding in Carmel, Indiana, they were too late to get out of their contract for a $30,000 reception at the Ritz Charles. But instead of letting the room sit empty, Cummins called the city's homeless shelters and invited their patrons to dinner.

"It was really devastating," Cummins told the Indianapolis Star. "I called everyone, canceled, apologized, cried, called vendors, cried some more, and then I started feeling really sick about just throwing away all the food I ordered for the reception."

Guests from the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation, Wheeler Mission, Third Phase Christian Center, and Dayspring Center were treated to the menu the couple had selected for their reception, including bourbon-glazed meatballs and roasted garlic bruschetta hors d'oeuvres, wedding cake (sliced out of sight of the guests), and late-night pizza. When the Star reported on the event ahead of time, local readers and businesses donated suits, dresses, and semi-formal attire for adults and children.

"For a lot of us, this is a good time to show us what we can have," said Charlie Allen, one of the Wheeler Mission residents who attended the dinner, "or to remind us what we had."
