Perfect First Dance Tunes
One of the most thrilling and special moments of any wedding is when the couple locks eyes on the dance floor and moves around to a special song. The first dance is an awe-worthy and unforgettable moment. For couples planning their big day, picking out a song that encompasses their relationship, their emotions, and their feelings for one another can be quite tough.
To help give suggestions, we asked eight wedding DJs to share their top pick for a first dance song and why.
"Opposites Attract" (Paula Abdul)
"We never forgot the importance of the first dance to any newlyweds, they are going to remember it forever, it has to be special to them," says James Crawford, a wedding DJ. "The song which seemed to be chosen over all others was 'Opposites Attract' by Paula Abdul. It certainly made for some entertaining first dances."
"I Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You" (Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons)
"As a longtime wedding DJ, I always recommend a classic song that will stand the test of time," says Charlene Bazarian, owner of DJ service Rick Obey’s Entertainment. "I personally recommend 'I Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You' by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. It’s a nice up-tempo song that a couple can dance to and the crowd always enjoys it."
"Can't Help Falling in Love" (Elvis Presley)
"My top pick for a first dance song is tough to do since every couple is different and has different tastes in music," says Jason Rubio, founder of Austin’s Best DJs & Photo Booths. "However, if they asked us for just one song recommendation, I would say one great song would be 'Can't Help Falling in Love' by Elvis Presley. Ironically, most couples don't choose the Elvis Presley version of the song. There are so many versions of the song, and many are just as good."
"At Last" (Etta James)
"I have to say that the best First Dance song is often one that has a specific meaning behind it for the couple," Artem Lomaz, MC alongside DJs for NinetyThree Entertainment. "With that said, I always recommend the Etta James classic 'At Last.' It's romantic with a hint of timeless elegance that makes it appropriate for any type of wedding."
"Somos Novios" (Andrea Bocelli & Christina Aguilera)
"I always recommend the song 'Somos Novios' by Andrea Bocelli and Christina Aguilera. I find it to be romantic and a hidden gem," says DJ Mova. "Two powerhouse voices in Andrea Bocelli and Christina Aguilera on one track singing about love, it's the perfect balance for a first dance."
"Your Song" (Elton John)
"One of my favorite songs for a first dance that hardly ever gets used is 'Your Song' by Elton John," says DJ Bryan Chesters. "The lyrics are so beautiful and timeless. A lot of my couples are just starting out their lives and their love story is just at the beginning and the song represents that kind of innocence and the start of a long life together."
"Into the Mystic" (Van Morrison)
"I really love the song 'Into The Mystic' by Van Morrison," says DJ Dazzler. "This song is perfect because it's timeless, not trendy and can live on for generations to come without sounding too out of date, or kitschy. It's light hearted and fun yet romantic at the same time."
"Joy of My Life" (Chris Stapleton)
"My pick would be 'Joy of My Life' by Chris Stapleton,"says David Krieger, Owner + DJ, Krieger Entertainment. "It's not a particularly fancy song, but it has a great tempo to dance to, whether you've got a choreographed routine or just want to sway for a bit."
