Step into Autumn with Fresh Fall Style
Fall is a great time to refresh your wardrobe with new picks for the season, but figuring out what trends are here to stay can be overwhelming. We consulted with celebrity stylist and fashion guru extraordinaire Eric Himel to find out what’s hot (and what’s not!) for the upcoming season, as well as tips on how to rock each style.
TREND: Faux Croc Heels
Rock the (faux!) croc in a textured statement shoe. Don’t be afraid, these shoes are actually super versatile. Himel suggests wearing them with a dress, skirt or even jeans for a night out.
“Their texture is what makes them interesting,” Himel says. “Pick a sandal, classic pump or bootie and literally any color you can think of!”
BUY IT: Zappos, $350
TREND: Lower Waist Straight Leg Denim
Finally, jeans made for everyone are back in style. Skinny jeans and high-waisted jeans are out, making room for lower waist denim. Himel suggests pairing them with a tailored blazer or more of a man-tailored shirt.
“Wear them slung lower on the hips (size up if you have to!),” he says.
BUY IT: Topshop, $75
TREND: Colorful Tights
“‘Pop-of-Color should become one of your fashion staples,” Himel says.
Tights are a great way to express yourself—just make sure they're the only pop of color, so you don’t look clown-like.
BUY IT: Walmart, $9
TREND: Itty Bitty Bags
Trade in those big bags that hold just about everything for these teeny tiny bags that may just be a bit more pretty than they are practical. (Himel warns that many don’t take the size of current phones into account) Try replacing your clutch with this precious parcel next time you have a night on the town.
BUY IT: Boohoo, $14
TREND: Satin
Satin isn’t just for party dresses anymore. According to Himel, we should expect to see it this fall on everything from biker jackets to cargo pants and anoraks. It’s worth investing in this timeless material but word of warning, satin snags very easily.
BUY IT: Saks Fifth Avenue, $278
TREND: Feathers
You’ll want to be part of the flock rocking this style, but less is more or you’ll end up looking like Big Bird. Himel thinks “feathers are fun, flirty and full of movement,” but if you are afraid to rock it, “try it as a clutch or accent on a shoe.”
BUY IT: Nordstrom, $158
TREND: Brown Leather
Leather really never goes out of style, but warmer browns are taking the place of stark black this season. Himel suggests pairing brown leather with burgundy, hunter green or cream for the best look.
BUY IT: asos, $103
TREND: Gold
All that glitters is gold, and that’s no different when it’s your clothing! Himel advises pairing gold patterns with any matte color to avoid too much shimmer. He also suggests picking a true gold, not a yellowish version.
BUY IT: Amazon, $160
TREND: Capes
“Capes give the illusion of a coat thrown effortlessly over your shoulders with the practicability of not falling off,” Himel says.
This style is best paired with something narrower on the bottom, like skinny jeans, leather leggings or a pencil skirt.
BUY IT: Bloomingdales, $180
TREND: Prep School
With the return of 90210, a Gossip Girl remake in the works and New Kids on the Block back on tour, it’s no surprise that the preppy 80’s look is back in style. Embrace it! Rugby stripes, monograms, button-down collars and crests are all fair game this fall.
BUY IT: Macy’s, $98
TREND: Statement Sweaters
This isn’t your average sweater: These statement pieces have a lot of style and make a great fall coat.
“Just don’t wear a sweater underneath,” says Himel. “Too much knit-on-knit!”
BUY IT: Urban Outfitters, $199
TREND: Renaissance Fair
Yep, that Renaissance Fair! The look of square necklines and fitted sleeves is in.
“This silhouette is the new cold-shoulder,” Himel says. “Rock it with an A-line skirt or high-waisted jeans.”
BUY IT: Nordstrom, $50
