Keep the Outdoor Fun Alive
As we move into fall and winter, temperatures are getting colder and it’s getting dark earlier, but that doesn’t mean we have to move inside just yet. There are plenty of ways you can extend life outdoors into the next season with a few décor items. Here are 10 of our favorites.
Long Underwear
Stocking up on long underwear for sledding or skiing is one thing but, this winter, long underwear may be a daily outdoor necessity. It’s worth the extra splurge for something like Patagonia base layers for the whole family. The material is super soft, moisture wicking and meant to keep you warm.
BUY IT: Patagonia, $25-$149
Firepit
You may not have room to build a firepit and that’s what makes this one so great. The solo stove is portable so you can use it in a backyard, take it camping or even bring it over to a friend’s yard. The design leads to an almost smokeless fire and the company even makes a smaller size that’s perfect for city dwellers with minimal space.
BUY IT: Solo Stove, $195
Games to Play in the Dark
The fall also brings darker skies, so why not use that to your advantage? Capture the flag redux is a twist on the classic game made with glow-in-the-dark features. You can play with four to 20 people and it’s the perfect game for kids or adults so the whole family can get in on the fun.
BUY IT: Amazon, $50
Patio Heater
If dinners on the patio have been your livelihood this summer, it doesn’t hurt to add a little warmth for cooler nights. Patio heaters will help take the chill out of the air and let you enjoy those outdoor dinners for a little bit longer.
BUY IT: Home Depot, $145
Hot/Cold Cups
Whether it’s an outdoor baseball game, a walk with a friend, an outdoor yoga class or patio hangs, you are going to want a good cup that will keep coffee and tea hot, or wine, beer and water cold.
BUY IT: MiiR, $20
Wagon
As temperatures drop, there is more stuff to schlep (and that may include your kids if they are little). Wagons are perfect for apple picking, carting sports equipment to the field, groceries or even firewood.
BUY IT: Amazon, $99
Waterproof/Windproof Blanket
Usually, we use blankets for cozying up on the couch, but now you may want to take them with you. This waterproof and windproof fleece blanket is perfect for staying warm in a stroller, around a campfire or while on a picnic. This one buttons up like a poncho, so you can even wear it hands free.
BUY IT: Amazon, $30
A Good Tarp
If you don’t have one in your garage, this is an inexpensive and worthy investment. As temperatures get colder and the weather is more precipitous, you’ll want to have a tarp handy. It can cover wet ground, be thrown over furniture to keep it dry or be used while camping.
BUY IT: Target, $40
Folding Chair with Canopy
Scorching sun or a little rain won’t bother you if you are lounging in this camping chair. A complete canopy covers the top to protect you from the elements while watching a youth baseball game or having a few cocktails in your driveway.
BUY IT: Target, $59
String Lights
If you are spending more time outside in the dark, you may as well keep your space well lit. These string lights look chic, provide great light and are resistant, so you can leave them up even in the snow.
