You Deserve It, Mama
Most days, motherhood feels like a juggling act. From making sure your kids have everything they need, to maintaining your home, balancing work and trying to be a good partner, friend and daughter--it’s no wonder moms usually feel run down. While we are trying so hard to make sure everyone and everything in our lives are running smoothly, we often forget to take care of ourselves. But not this year! This year we are going to take care of ourselves. Here are 10 easy ways to add self-care into your daily routine.
Make Sleep a Priority
We too often catch ourselves scrolling on our phones into the wee hours of the morning, but sleep is essential. So, set a strict bedtime for yourself and stick to it. That means getting your kids to bed, turning off your electronics and hitting the hay. It’s easy to try to get a ton of things done once the kids are asleep, but your physical and mental health will improve when you are rested. So just say “no” to Team No Sleep and say “yes” to a rested mama.
Make and Keep Health Appointments for Yourself
We know you are on top of all of your kid’s doctor appointments and check-ups, but when it comes to your own health, it’s easy to put things on the back burner. But not this year, Mom. Make time to schedule appointments, check-ups and be honest with your doctors about how you are feeling. Your kids want you around for a very long time, so you need to take care of you.
Get Outside
When you’ve got a million things to do, it’s easy to get stuck inside all day, but you can get a quick mental health boost by going outside and getting some fresh air. Even if it’s cold out, bundle up and take a quick walk. Whether it’s by yourself or taking your dog for an extra-long stroll, being outside can help you clear your mind and feel more invigorated.
Pamper Yourself
A weekly visit to the spa probably isn’t in your budget but pampering yourself at home can be the type of self-care that helps you feel rejuvenated. From an at-home mani-pedi to a sheet mask and a long shower, this is mom’s time, and you are not to be interrupted.
If you have a long list of books that you want to read, try audio books. While you are taking a walk, working out or folding laundry, you can escape into a great book without having to turn a page.
Make Time for Friends
We know you love your gal pals but scheduling a girl’s night can drop to the bottom of your to-do list. We’ve all learned that we can stay connected to our favorite people through Zoom or other fun apps. So, go ahead, make the plans and enjoy laughing and smiling with your ladies. It’s good for you and for them.
Unplug
Step away from social media and turn off the news. Trust us, you and your mental health need this break. It will all be there when you return but unplugging for a bit is good for you.
Healthy Snacks on Hand
It’s easy to finish your kid’s leftover chicken nuggets or grab a handful of goldfish crackers instead of snacking on something that is good for you. So, when you are making your grocery list, make your meals and snacks a priority. Have the fruits, veggies and snacks that you like on hand. Treat yourself to premade smoothies or a great protein bar that is yummy and makes you feel full.
Declutter Your Space
It’s hard to feel calm when your space feels out of control. Start with one room at a time and begin the decluttering process. Don’t feel like you have to tackle your entire house all at once, just start small and work your way through different rooms. Even if this means it takes you a few weeks or months, that’s O.K. In each room, figure out what you should keep, toss, donate and sell. If you have a friend that is a wiz at organization, ask them to help you. Once you are done, simply walking into a room in your house won’t cause you so much stress.
Ask for Help
We know that you are a superwoman, but we all need help. So, enlist the help of friends and family and rid yourself of any mom guilt you may have about this. Use the time you have without kids hanging on you every minute of the day to relax, destress or tackle a project.
