Socially Distant Autumn Activities
Things may not look like a typical fall, but it can still be a fun one. Fall temperatures are usually mild enough to still have fun outside, even if it’s in sweats. Large Pumpkinfests or harvest parties may be cancelled but the essence of them is still there. Here are 10 ways you can still celebrate a fun fall season.
Pumpkin Spice Everything
A true sign that it’s fall? Pumpkin spice! The cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and spice combination is a true signifier of the season and it’s not going away. You can go to your local Starbucks for a pumpkin spice latte or a number of other sweet treats including peanut butter and spiked seltzer, or muffins and cream cheese. Pumpkin spice lovers can even pick up hand wash, hand sanitizer and body wash in the signature scent.
Soak in Changing Leaves
Depending on where you live, for many, one of the amazing parts of fall is watching the leaves change colors. Go on a hike, take a scenic drive, bike ride and take in the awe of nature. Don’t forget to bring your camera for fun photos against this beautifully scenic background.
Go Apple Picking
Apples are still growing, and many orchards have found a way to offer safe and socially distant apple picking. Mask up and find an orchard. Make sure to check your local orchard’s website for COVID-19 adjustments and harvest updates.
Cider and Donuts
Pick up cider and donuts at an apple orchard, farm stand, a cider mill or even your local grocery store. Fall is the time to indulge! Fresh pressed cider is the best if you can find it, along with freshly baked donuts.
Do Some Pumpkin Carving
Carving pumpkins is a fall tradition, and one that you don’t need to stop. Whether you venture to a pumpkin farm or just your local store to pick up a pumpkin, you can still make an awesome Jack O’ Lantern. Set up outside with friends or cover your table with newspaper and carve away. Save the seeds, rinse and then roast them in the oven for a special treat.
Make Chili
When the temperatures start to cool down there is nothing more comforting than chili! Whether you go classic, white chicken chili, vegan, pumpkin or cowboy, there are many different varieties that just scream fall. Do a chili cookoff with neighbors. Have everyone whip up a large batch and you can exchange a food storage container full of your chili. We bet you’ll have a ton of new recipes by the end of fall.
Jump in the Leaves
Remember as a kid when jumping in the leaves was the best thing ever? We bet your kids will still think so, too. If you are in an area where the leaves gather, make a pile and let your kids go to town. It’s free and kids will want to do it over and over again. Don’t forget the camera!
Go for a Hike
Hiking and biking aren’t just for summer – there is still so much to see in the fall. Take advantage of finding trails nearby, seeking out spots to skip rocks, and maybe even create a nature scavenger hunt for your adventure.
Cozy Around the Campfire
Campfires are great in the summer, but they are the BEST when the weather cools down just a little bit. Throw on your fleece and heat up the fire for stories, S’mores and spiced cider.
Make a Pie
You need to do something with all of the apples you pick. Or perhaps you prefer pears or pumpkin. There is something about fall that makes it feel like pie season. You can decide how much of the pie you want to make from scratch (you can always buy the crust or the filling), and you’ll still get that delicious, right-out-of-the-oven smell.
