Jenna Karvunidis, the mommy blogger who pioneered the gender reveal party trend, has some new ideas about the importance of gender when it comes to your children.
In 2008 when Karvunidis was pregnant with her first daughter, Bianca, she baked a cake with a pink inside that revealed the sex of her baby to friends and family. Fast forward to 2019: Bianca is 10 years old, loves to wear suits and expresses herself in non-binary ways.
In a Facebook post, Karvunidis wrote: “Assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what's between their legs.”
Bianca’s Instagram account, which is managed by her mother, highlights some of the wonderful, non-conforming, gender-irrelevant things that make Bianca who she is. She is a Girl Scout, loves to swim and has a great eye for style, for example.
While Karvunidis doesn’t condone the shaming of parents who would like to throw a gender reveal party, she does however encourage parents to simply throw a pregnancy reveal party instead. In an interview with Buzzfeed News, Karvunidis said that “just because [the gender] is the first thing we know about our kids, it’s not the most important by far."
When it comes to gender, Karvunidis is simply “taking [her] daughter’s lead” and urges other parents to do the same with their own children.
