Upcycle and DIY Ideas
Being stuck at home can leave you feeling bored. If you’ve been wanting to add a little flair to your home, try starting an easy DIY project. We’ve collected a few items that are guaranteed to elevate the look of your décor without taking much time to complete.
Flower Display
Supplies:
- Fake Flower(s)
- Mini Vase(s)
- Play Sand
- Scissors
Directions: To make these beautiful and simple displays, start by filling a vase halfway with play sand. Gather your favorite fake flowers and cut the stems off. Place the blooming head on top of the sand and feature them around your home.
A Spa-Inspired Floor Mat
Supplies:
- Floor Mat
- Garden Pebbles
- 5-Minute Epoxy or Hot Glue
Directions: Bring spa vibes to your foyer by first cleaning pebbles from a garden or store. Coat the back of each pebble with epoxy or hot glue and press them firmly into a plain mat. Fill the mat’s surface and allow the pebbles to dry in place for 5-10 minutes. Enjoy!
Storage Boxes
Supplies:
- Cardboard Boxes
- Packing Tape
- Contact Paper(s)
- Knobs (Optional)
- E6000 Glue (Optional)
Directions: Are you looking for storage options that are both affordable and cute for a kid’s room? Try gathering cardboard boxes and covering them with a layer of adhesive contact paper. Cut the paper to match the dimensions of your chosen box and use tape around the bottom edges to reinforce their hold. If you would like to add knobs to the front of your boxes for easy maneuvering, dab a pea-size amount of E6000 glue on the knob’s back and firmly press it on your new storage bin.
Wool Coasters
Supplies:
- Wool Material
- Pencil
- Large Cup or Glass
- Scissors
Directions: You’ve made a donation bag or box, but there are a few items that aren’t quite suitable. Upcycle old wool sweaters and cardigans by turning them into cute little coasters. Start by washing the wool item in hot water and drying them with a heavy denim, like jeans. Repeat this process about three times to make the material feel like felt. Then, set a large-mouthed glass or cup face down on the wool and trace the circle shape with a pencil. Cut the circles out and set your table.
Tie Dye Napkins
Supplies:
- White Napkin(s)
- Tie Dye Kit
- Rubber bands (If the kit does not include them)
Directions: Add a little life to your dinner table with cute tie-dye napkins. Start by choosing a few white cloth napkins and a workspace that you’re comfortable getting a little messy–we suggest the bathtub. Tie the napkins together tightly and secure the hold with rubber bands. Coat the tied napkins with dye and let the mix sit for your kit’s specified time. Rinse, dry and showcase!
A Planter
Supplies:
- 5 Small Tiles
- Superglue
- Scissors
- 2-Liter Plastic Soda Bottle
Directions: Make your plants their own centerpiece with beautiful tile planters. Choose five tiles with a design you love and glue them together in the shape of a cube. Set your structure aside and cut the top two thirds of your liter bottle off before filling the base with soil and your plant. Place the “potted” plant into your tile planter and enjoy!
Photo Collage Letters
Supplies:
- Paper Mache or Wood Letters
- Craft Paint
- Paintbrushes
- Mod Podge
- Glue
- 4x6 Photos
Directions: Put your family or loved ones on display with these creative letters. Start by choosing the word you would like to spell and buying either paper mache or wood letters, which can be found at most craft stores. Paint the letters your desired color and add a layer of Mod Podge to the dried paint for an added shine. Next, cut out your photos and glue them to the letters. Let everything dry and feature the beautiful collage in a prominent spot -- you'll smile every time you see it.
