The Viral Momcozy Hip Seat Genuinely Surprised Me
This unique baby carrier changed the game, but will it replace traditional ones? Here's a new mom's honest review.

One thing I am learning as a first-time mom is how quickly my baby’s preferences change. For a while, she adored being in the stroller. I could roll her around town in it for hours and she’d be happy or take a nap. But over the last few months, she has become fussy and upset after a few minutes of being strapped into her stroller and prefers to be carried instead.
I put her in a baby carrier and take her on walks or to the store but after a few hours, my back is hurting and my body is in pain.
I saw a few people in my neighborhood carrying their baby with a unique type of product that seemed fun for the baby and more suited for my body.
It was the Momcozy Hip Seat Baby Carrier. Once I started doing research, I saw the product had good reviews and was included on a lot of must-have lists for new moms. I decided to give it a try. Here’s what I liked about the product and here’s what surprised me.
It’s Different Than Anything Else I’ve Tried
There are plenty of moments throughout the day when my baby wants to be held. But she’s hovering close to 25 pounds and after a few minutes, my body starts to feel pain. When I put her in a baby carrier, my back starts to tingle after a while too. This product is different from anything I’ve tried before.
The product is a widened waist band that straps around your lower stomach area. It has a seat on the side for your baby to sit on. They can sit inward-facing or outward-facing. It’s designed to evenly distribute their weight so that it alleviates pressure on the parent’s back and shoulders.
At first, I was nervous that wearing this would be bulky. While the product looks large when you take it out of the box, it’s lightweight and less than a pound. When I put it on, it fit my body well and didn’t feel heavy to wear around my waist.

It Was Easy to Put On
When I go to put on a baby carrier, it can take me a minute or two to get the straps on correctly and make sure that my baby is settled in comfortably. I was shocked at how easy it was to put on. I clipped it around my waist, picked up my baby, and sat her facing me. She was comfortable and smiling as we walked around the neighborhood.
I also found myself using it at home when she was fussy or just wanted to be held. Putting her on the seat and using my other hand to support her back, made her feel light to hold and fully supported.

I Didn’t Feel Pain
I used the product for a week instead of my baby carrier and found that I didn’t have as much back pain or body pain. I wore the hip seat for an hour when I took her to an event and did feel a little bit of soreness around my abdomen afterward, but nothing as bad as the shoulder or back pressure that I felt when using a baby carrier for the same amount of time.
It Comes With Storage
Another benefit of the product is that it has storage pockets. When I would use my baby carrier, I’d also have to wear a backpack or bring a tote bag with diapers and a bottle. But this hip seat has pockets that can store my phone, a bottle, diapers, and my wallet. This allowed me to ditch the extra bag I’d have to bring with me when she was in the baby carrier.

You Can’t Be Hands-Free
The biggest downside to this product was that you can’t be hands free when your baby is on the hip seat. You do have to use at least one hand to support their back and hold them on. There’s nothing strapping them onto the seat except for your arm so you have to be mindful when using this hip seat and make sure that you’re paying attention to them on it at all times and holding their back.
It was hard in some situations to only have one free hand, like when I needed to pull out a bottle to give to her or open a door. The product can be used for a baby up to 45 pounds. My baby is close to 25 pounds and it was comfortable holding her on the seat, but I do fear that as she gets heavier, this will hurt my hips and lower back more than it does now.

While I loved this product, I don’t think it will replace my traditional baby carrier that I use when I’m going for longer trips with my baby. Instead, this product will be my go-to solution for fussy moments in the house when she wants to be held or when I’m at a party or event and only plan on holding her for a few minutes before putting her in a high chair or safe activity center. If you’re someone who wants to hold your baby more often, for a few minutes here and there, without feeling back or shoulder pain, this is a good solution.
